Fall is here! Breath in the crisp air, can’t you smell it. The leaves are starting to fall and cover the grounds of our beautiful campus. Being at the University of North Carolina during the fall is something I am looking forward to. There is no better place to sit down and study or complete assignments than out in the fresh fall air. The perfect place to write essays, like the ones for this course.

English 105 has given me a space to write and research topics I am interested in. On Wednesday we completed unit one with a final draft of our research papers in the natural sciences. Throughout the unit we completed feeder assignments and essay drafts. We have been given the time for peer revision, after posting our drafts a peer revision workshop is held in the next class. This is a great opportunity to check over your grammar, understanding of the prompt and even essay structure before submitting the final draft. In addition to receiving feedback from peers, Paul gives extensive feedback for each submission. This feedback is intended to assist in the development of our writing abilities.

For my paper I research the possible side effects on adolescents from taking antidepressants. The research aspect itself was interesting, with the amount of information available to us through the UNC libraries databases. Thanks, and gratitude to Mr. Guy for showing us the endless possibilities of researching and the resources available to students at UNC. Structuring my paper was the most difficult part of unit one for me however, it was completed well with the help from detailed rubrics made by Paul. I have learned the correct ways to format CSE citations and how to identify appropriate sources of research.

While undergoing our unit of natural sciences research my interest was piqued by news on campus. There has been a discovery of alarming levels of lead contaminating water sources across campus. One of the contaminated water sources is located in Wilson library, a place where many of us go to complete classwork. This lead has been found in many other buildings across our campus some of which being offices and buildings which hold many classes. This is an ongoing investigation across campus water supply by the Environmental Health Department (EHS). As students on campus, we have been informed of the results and updates of the investigation by mass emails. I will provide a link below for the UNC website which gives more details on the lead issue. This could be a great topic for a research paper, much like the ones written for unit one.

Moving on from unit one we started unit two in class Thursday. Unit two revolves around writing in the social sciences. We started off class by gathering into new groups, my group is named “Kill the Exams”. After introducing ourselves to one another and completing a class workshop to enter our new unit, we each chose topics of study for unit two. My group of chose is the Morehead Cain scholars. I will be studying this social group in many aspects such as what types of individuals are in this program, the purpose of the program, and even the pressure put these scholars. I am excited to learn more about the social groups on campus through my peers’ papers.

We end the week with a much-needed long weekend, due to Monday being a wellness day. I hope you all have used the extra time to relax and enjoy the beginning of this beautiful fall weather. You may have even used the extra time to complete some classwork and studying for upcoming exams. Goodluck to all of you, have a good week!
