What is a Safe Operating Procedure?

A safe operating procedure (SOP) is a written protocol that outlines step-by-step directions to safely perform a task. SOPs can include how to safely handle/use a chemical, operate an instrument, analyze data, and more!

Why are SOPs important in chemistry?

  • SOPs provide a consistent and uniform protocol for all users to follow. This can help train new users, serve as a reminder for current users, & also pass down knowledge between users.
  • These protocols emphasize safety precautions relevant to the task. This can prevent both harm to users and/or instrumentation.
  • Sometimes, laboratories take on new directions and therefore new tasks! SOPs can provide a starting point for learning new things & safe ways to execute them!
