Fuel Pedal Linkage

Hi Dad… For a while I didn’t think this car actually came with a gas pedal and associated linkages. Seems like it was constantly being overlooked, until, what do you know, there it was. It was of course rusty. It took me a while of looking at it to see how it went together, but I eventually realized that there are little pins that need to be driven out to free the nylon bearing supports. Here is the picture from the Workshop Manual, with the top version being for Left hand drive cars. Mine is not exactly like this one as the pedal and the shaft are all one piece. The way I understand it, the half-clam bearing housings clamp a nylon bearing between the footwell and the engine tunnel. The shaft then traverses across the rear of the engine along the firewall and then enters the passenger footwell in the same way. The actuating arm to the carburetors mounts engine side near the passenger footwell.

After a little wire wheeling to find the pins, it was s simple matter of drifting them out to separate the bits for cleaning and painting.

Once I got the arms and supports off it was clear the shaft itself was quite bent.

I was able to correct this on an arbor press without too much trouble. I can see where it becomes bent though as it sits along the firewall at the back of the engine block, and would easily be hooked when trying to pull the engine. Would make sense to remove this shaft before pulling the engine, but me thinks the assembly is a PITA. Anyways after painting and assembly it now looks ready to store for future assembly. check…
