Pedal Box

This turned into a straightforward couple weekend project. The pedal box was a seized, rusted mess, but a lot of penetrating oil, a little heat and I was eventually able to once again move the pedals independently. The pin the pedals swivel on goes through two bushings, one for each, with a space in between. It was in this space where the rusting was bad. The shaft was heavily pitted there but where it rode in the brass bushes it looked pretty good after wire wheeling so I reused it. It took some time to disassemble without breaking anything, but in the end it came apart in whole pieces.

The first step is to remove a pair of U-shaped brackets that fit over the protruding 4 bolts and hold the shaft in place. You can see them removed just behind in the photo below.

These pictures were after I blew out the beetles and webs hiding in the nooks and crannies. After that it was a matter of a lot of media blasting to get at the rust hiding in all of the corners. Once complete, painting, reassembling, and adding the rubber foot peddles finished the job.  Into storage until needed.
