Common Core State Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.4
For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
Objective
- View a 360° video and model adding and subtracting 5 in a math journal.
Recommended Teaching Strategy
Example 360° Learning Experience
Show students the recommended video, asking them to say where they can see a group of 10 pumpkins. The most obvious one will be the group on and below the bench. Ask 10 students to come to the front of the class, each representing a pumpkin. Split them into groups of 10 and 0, 9 and 1, 8 and 2, etc. Record 10+0=10, 9+1=10 on the board. Continue modeling through 10+0=10. Have students record their equations (or drawings of their manipulatives) in their math journals. By writing the equations, students will see that there are multiple ways to add numbers that equal 10.
