Common Core State Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2

Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Objective

  • Students will view a 360° video and compare the number of different items shown in the video.

Recommended Teaching Strategy

Example 360° Learning Experience

Show students the recommended video below and ask them to count the number of pumpkins they can see. Scroll around the video, allowing students to count all of the pumpkins. Selecting either a section of the video or using the full visual, give students several manipulatives (unit cubes, counting bears, etc.) equal to the number of pumpkins they can see.

Present students with a series of word problems, either verbally or visually, asking them to add or subtract. Some examples include pumpkins falling off or being added onto the bench, people picking pumpkins out of the patch or new ones growing in, etc. Students should model the addition or subtraction using their manipulatives. Optionally, students can record their equations in their math journals, drawing the manipulatives they used to support their thinking.
