Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.1

Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

Objective

Students will write a persuasive argument that justifies why one image of nature is the most beautiful.

360° Learning Experience

Teachers present students with multiple 360° scenes depicting aesthetically pleasing scenes in nature, such as the sunset, ocean, forest, lake, flowers, and more! Next, teachers prompt students to argue in writing which of the images presented to them is the most beautiful depiction of nature. As part of that writing, students need to explain their selection based on logic and reasoning from the image, such as the image’s coloring, content, or setting. When finished, students can share their writing in small groups to gain feedback.

Teaching Strategy

Example 360° Learning Experience

The following writing is an example justification that explains why the Duke Gardens Asiatic Arboretum Path and Pond is the most beautiful nature scene from the videos below.

Under a bright and vibrant sky, the image of the pond below is the most beautiful because it reflects the radiance of the day. At first glance, the pond appears ordinary, like any pond I have seen. However, looking at it deeper, there are streaks that reflect shimmers of the sky. Then, when turning around, the railed path is idyllic, with its brown, wooden look. Finally, the green, lush plants demonstrate nature’s glory and the freshness of rebirth and life that is often a key element of it. Because of the way this scene combines the pond with the sky, path, and greenery, it is the most beautiful nature scene.
