Our project, “Blending In and Standing Out”, aims to explore the intersections of various aspects of Georges and Alice Lurcy’s assimilation process as they moved through different places and stages of their lives. We will also examine their transitions between “insider” and “outsider” status in the many places they called home, both individually and as a couple. With this presentation, we hope to leave the visitor with a deeper understanding of the multifaceted array of circumstances surrounding the immigration experience of Jewish people into American citizenship and culture during the tumultuous trials of WWII. We also hope to help the visitor place themselves in the shoes of an immigrant, and examine the impact and value of “insider” vs “outsider” status in their own lives.
