CLEAN was founded in the spring of 2020 and we have been busy since then! Our activities to date include:

  • Collaborating with UNC School of Medicine faculty to incorporate clinically-relevant content about health impacts of climate change and pollution in the curriculum for first- and second-year medical students
  • Designing and teaching a six-week summer seminar for incoming first-year medical students called “Environmental Medicine: Climate Change, Pollution, and Human Health”
  • Adding a “Health Systems & the Environment” module to the School of Medicine SHS 5 course, encouraging fourth-year medical students to explore the impact that healthcare systems have on the environment
  • Hosting campus events to raise awareness and build community (see our Events page)
  • Affiliating with Medical Students for a Sustainable Future
  • Participating in the Planetary Health Report Card, a student-led initiative to inspire planetary health engagement in medical schools
  • Working with Clean Air Carolina to build a state-wide network of clinicians, trainees, and other health professionals involved in the movement for climate action and health equity in North Carolina
  • Planning new projects and exploring collaborations with medical schools around North Carolina

We are just getting started!
