Hello! Welcome to the Brown Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We are based in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, a unique program combining engineering and global public health that has trained generations of scientists and engineers at this critical interface since its founding over 100 years ago. We study water and sanitation technologies, environmental health microbiology, and the role of infrastructure in protecting public health and well-being. Our current work includes the use of fecal waste streams in public health surveillance; the development and application of novel tools to track pathogens in environmental media; and observational and experimental studies to estimate the effects of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions in controlling the transmission of infectious diseases. We work closely with UNC’s Water Institute, the university’s main focal point for interdisciplinary water research.
