Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.2

Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

Objective

  • Students will view a 360° video, identify shapes within the video, and create composite shapes.

Recommended Teaching Strategy

Example 360° Learning Experience

Show students the recommended video and ask them to name the shapes they can see. Students should copy all the shapes they can find into their math journals. Once several shapes are recorded, students can draw composite shapes, identifying the polygons within the composite figure.

Students can conference with their classmates in pairs or small groups to see their composite shapes. Students can help their peers create more figures and record other’s work in their own math journals to further their understanding.
