Common Core State Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.G.A.1

Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

Objective

  • Students will view a 360° video, identify shapes within the video, then compare and contrast geometric properties of those shapes using Venn diagrams.

Recommended Teaching Strategy

Example 360° Learning Experience

Show students the video, navigating around so they get a sense of the scene. Students will complete the graphic organizer. First, they should see if any shapes in the video fit the criteria above each category. (The categories can be edited based on what your students need to practice identifying.) Once they identify enough shapes, they can draw shapes that fall into the correct category in either of the Venn diagram’s circles.

For example: a student could identify a window as a rectangle, and draw a rectangle in the closed + 4-sided section of the Venn diagram.

Further examples can be found in the answer key of the worksheet linked below.

Once students complete the diagrams, they can check their work with a peer during a think-pair-share matchup.
