Common Core State Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.NBT.A.1

Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (such as 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.2.B

The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.

Objective

  • Students will view a 360° video, count the number of different objects in the video, and decompose those numbers with the support of a graphic organizer

Recommended Teaching Strategy

Example 360° Learning Experience

Show students the recommended video and ask them to count the number of different objects they can see. Scroll around the video, allowing students to see all of the countable items.

Present students with the graphic organizer, explaining that they will be selecting a number of items and decomposing their numbers using ten and ones. For example, complete one number bubble using the number of sticks in the “Hi” on the board. Put the number 15 in the top bubble to represent the number of sticks and 10 in one of the bottom ones. Ask students which number will complete the number bubble. Instruct students to fill out the rest of the number bubbles using examples from the video.

Some examples of countable items include:

  • Number of blocks in the blue “S”
  • Number of green blocks in the “M”
  • Number of yellow blocks on the entire board

Students can also support their thinking with base ten blocks.
