Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.

Objective

Students will read an excerpt of a speech made by President Kennedy about going to the moon before modifying the speech based on the setting while keeping its purpose intact.

360° Learning Experience

Teacher choose a text that contains a verbal address (e.g., dialogue, speech) made by a speaker, narrator, or character. Teachers then show students 3-5 360° images or videos of possible settings for the address, and the settings include audience members, weather, and other factors. Next, teachers ask students to revise the address to fit the setting shown in the images/videos. Finally, teachers can have students perform or orate the revised addressed.

Teaching Strategy

Example Piece of Writing

Prompt: Read this excerpt of President Kennedy’s speech about going to the moon. Next, pick one of the following settings and revise the except based on the setting.

This example is based on the Fall Festival Music setting.

At this time, outer space is a free space, but it is dangerous. Like we do in our daily lives, we should work hard to work with each other, both in our country and in the world, to keep space free and peaceful, and the first step to doing that is to go to the moon! We should go because the challenge will be great, but the payoff will be even greater. It is the reason we til the land, sing our songs, and raise our families despite the obstacles that exist. The sense of pride we feel when our crops grow, our signs are heard, and children become adults, that is the reason. Join us on this adventure, and let’s go to the moon, not as individuals, but as a country united and leader in the world!
