Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.4

Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.

Objective

Students will interpret the theme(s) and/or feeling(s) from a 360° video to prepare them for an upcoming text.

360° Learning Experience

Teachers show students a 360° image or video that captures the mood or setting for an upcoming text that will be read in class. Next, teachers have students write a paragraph that describes the feelings, emotions, or other ideas they feel are reflected in the 360° media. For example, an image of an incoming rain storm could be foreboding, cold, or scary, while a video of a crowd singing along at a concert could be energetic, festive, or communal. In their writing, students need to use an example from the media to justify their their description. To support students, teachers can provide a a word bank of associations and connotations appropriate for the grade level.

Recommended Teaching Strategy

Recommended 360° Content

In this example, the focus text is Charlotte’s Web and the goal is to prepare students for what it feels like to be at a fair. The writing prompt for this activity: What do you think the mood is like at a fair such as the one shown in this 360° video?

In this video, it shows a lively, energetic scene where there is signing, dancing, and a market. The people in the video look like they are having a good time, based on their body language and movements. For example, the mother with a child in her harness smiles at her daughter and hugs her. Also, the musician signing the song also smiles at the beginning of the video, and he appears to be enjoying the moment. In all, the mood for this scene is upbeat and festive.
