Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Objective
Students will listen to an informative presentation followed by selecting a setting for the information to be presented again live along with a written explanation regarding why that setting and audience would be appropriate for that information.
360° Learning Experience
Teachers will show students 360° videos of where people gather for events. Next, they will play a short podcast. (If you’re looking for free podcasts, check out these selections offered by Google.) In response, teachers will have students make an inference about the people who may gather in the different spaces and decide which space would be the most appropriate for the message communicated in the podcast, based on the audience who would gather in the space along with the task and purpose interpreted from the message.
Teaching Strategy
Example
Prompt: Listen to the podcast “How to Reduce Your Climate Footprint” and based on the message, explain which of the following settings it would be most impactful to the audience: the football stadium, the amphitheater, or the outdoor eating space.
The podcast “How to Reduce Your Climate Footprint” provides tips and strategies for living more sustainably. While the information can be used by a wide swath of people, making a presentation about this topic to fans in the football stadium might be too impersonal and easily ignored. On the other hand, talking to only one person about this or a small group having lunch together is reasonable, as would take place in the outdoor eating place. However, the message is very important, and a purpose for sharing this information would be limited by the number of people it could reach in this smaller setting. As such, the amphitheater is the appropriate venue because the people who may gather in that space are expecting a presentation or performance of some sort, and the number of the people in that space would be less than the football stadium but larger than the eating space. In this way, the purpose of the message would better resonate with the audience in the amphitheater as compared to the other two places.
