Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.5

Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

Objective

Students will write figurative language and share it with classmates using a think-pair-share activity.

Example 360° Learning Experience

Teachers first review what figurative language is with their students. Next, they will show students a 360° image or video that is ripe with possibilities for writing figurative descriptive language. Students will then write a piece of figurative language to describe an aspect of the 360° image or video they are viewing. Once they have written their figurative language, Student A will share their figurative description with a Student B, who is a classmate. Student B will look for the aspect in the image or video being described by Student A’s use of figurative language. Once identified, Student B will share his/her/their rationale for making the selection, and Student A will confirm if he/she/they are correct. Once completed, the students will swap roles and repeat. In addition, students can give each other feedback on what they found to be effective uses of figurate language along with areas for improvement.
