Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.4
Objective
Students will write a justification that explains how a vocabulary word is reflected in a 360° video or image
360° Learning Experience
Teachers review their list of vocabulary words for their subject area. Next, teachers browse for 360° images and videos that contextualize, symbolize, or represent one of the vocabulary words. Teachers then show the image or video to students and ask them which vocabulary is reflected in the image or video. Once students identify the vocabulary term, teachers can ask them to justify their selection by explaining how an element of the image or video connects back to the vocabulary word.
Recommended Teaching Strategy
Example of Matching a 360° Scene to a Vocabulary Word
In this example, the list of vocabulary words would include desolate, formidable, boisterous, and populous. In response to the image below, students could write:
This image represents the word desolate because the brick walls make the viewer feel cold and hopeless. The street looks dark and barren, particularly on the overcast when the video was recorded. Because desolate is defined as “deserted of people and in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness” and this image does not include any people or warmth, it is reflective of being desolate.
