Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1

Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

Objective

Students will analyze a text based on one of its central elements (e.g., characterization, plot, and themes) and explain how that element is reflected in a 360° video.

Example 360° Learning Experience

Teachers choose a text and have students read it. Next, teachers show students a 360° video that represent an element from the text (e.g., characterization, climax, setting, theme). Students are to then analyze the text and infer what aspect of the text the 360° video is representing. To complete the activity, students draw evidence from both the text and image to justify their inference.

Example of Text-Based, Open-Ended Writing Prompt

This example is based on the scene from Lois Lowry’s The Giver, when the children get bikes when they turn 9 years old. The prompt for this activity is “How might the children feel when they see their bicycles when entering a bike shop, as shown in this 360° video?” An example response is:

When entering the room, the 9-year olds will likely feel excitement as they get a new taste of independence and adulthood. To explain, being able to freely move about on a bicycle no longer limits them to staying by their house or within walking distance. Rather, they can explore the town with their friends and have new experiences, such as going fast down hill and riding to different places in their community. In this way, getting their bicycles are a significant moment in their independence.
