Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.2

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Objective

Students will use correct conventions when composing different sentence types.

360° Learning Experience

Teachers show students a 360° image or video that contains words for students to arrange into one or more sentences, such as signs, directions, menus, and more! Next, teachers have students use the language from the image or video to write a certain types of sentences (e.g., simple sentence, compound sentence, complex-compound sentence), a sentence with two nouns in its subject, or a sentence with a non-essential clause, among others. Teachers can differentiate the complexity of the sentence based on grade-level and student ability.

Teaching Strategy

Examples of Sentence Types

  • Luke the rabbit’s favorite vegetables are lettuce, carrots, and spinach.

In a Series Embedded within a Series

  • To organize the market, Laura has Bob bring the radish, beets, and carrots; Henry bring the Asian greens, spinach, and arugula; and Gretchen bring the brussell sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower.

Complex-Compound Sentence

While I really like lettuce, I don’t care for radishes, and I definitely don’t like beets.
