“My experience with MHI Summer has been one of the best opportunities I’ve ever had the chance to participate in. As a pre-med student, I understood there were certain things I was expected to complete during my undergraduate education to prepare for medical school, namely research. In looking for research positions for the summer, I found MHI Summer. This program has fostered my love of science and lab work into a passion I intend to pursue. The support system built around this program and the McAllister Heart Institute has been incredibly supportive, giving me an environment I felt comfortable to ask questions and grow. The mentors, PIs, and undergraduates in this program are not only knowledgeable, but warm and welcoming. They were always trying to accommodate our needs and learning styles so that we could get the most out of this experience. I’ve truly enjoyed the times we’ve spent together, both in and out of lab. Our journal clubs have been central to helping me understand how to develop and understand research questions while spending time with other students and PIs. We’ve also had the privilege to attend numerous workshops to set us up for success in professional school and beyond, including networking, mental health and wellness, and building an application. So much of this information can be difficult to access, especially as a student who is just working in a lab as opposed to a program like this one, so I am extremely grateful to MHI Summer. The many positive experiences I’ve had with MHI Summer have cemented my love for research, and allowed me to seriously consider graduate school. I plan to continue working in my lab and MHI in my new pursuit of an MD, PhD”. -MHI SUMMER Intern

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as an intern in the MHI summer research program. This program pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me the opportunity to work in the Giudice lab, which exposed me to different research”. -MHI SUMMER Intern

“Overall, this experience has taught me how to be a more critical researcher and has fine-tuned my professional skills. I want to extend my deepest thanks to Rebekah Sanchez-Hodge MPHVPH and Jonathan Schisler for giving me this invaluable opportunity and for providing me with unparalleled guidance and mentorship. From the moment I joined the program, I was welcomed with open arms by a supportive community of mentors and fellow interns who are genuinely passionate about cardiovascular research. I also could not have succeeded without the support of Emily Stutheit, who helped me in every way possible in the lab”. -MHI SUMMER Intern

“As an ambassador for MHI Summer, I got the chance to be a part of an amazing opportunity! Being a part of the process through which individuals from various backgrounds and disciplines came together to embrace research and navigated this new world of knowledge was transformative. Throughout this time, I was able to get involved in some of the events, like the weekly journal clubs, networking events, and social events. These eye-opening events helped me to see explore various avenues of science, research, and medicine that I would not have gotten the opportunity to do so elsewhere to early on in my educational career. Moreover, these students are bright-minded individuals, who with the exposure of research, can now use their newly unlocked potentials to further enhance their futures and, thus, the future science. Being able to get to know these students and their journeys has been a great and enjoyable experience, and I can definitely say I have gained some new friendships through this program. Overall, MHI Summer is an incredible opportunity providing new and innovative exposures to students to give individuals and the future of our world a better chance at success and improvement!”. -MHI Ambassador

“The MHI Summer program has provided me an unforgettable experience. From having the chance to attend Friday night lights at a Durham Baseball game, to being able to apply my learning from classes to real world issues, I would be lying to say I was not having a good time. Thanks to the program, I was able to work in a lab that better fits in my interests, and as well have the chance to present a poster of my work at the end of the summer at the AHA BCVS conference in Boston, an opportunity that would most likely not have been possible if it were not for MHI Summer. Not only this, but I have been able to learn several molecular biology techniques heavily involved in biological research, methods I have been wanting to learn since first hearing about how Carolina is heavily involved in research”. -MHI SUMMER Intern
