The Data, Culture, and Society Workshop is designed to bring faculty from the humanities and the humanistic social sciences at UNC together to explore how data impacts our lived realities. Data analysis now shapes almost every aspect of human life from the movement of financial capital to decisions on legislation and policing practices to how groups communicate and find information. As such data holds immense power in shaping our lives in profound ways and is in desperate need of humanistic analysis. The Data, Culture, and Society Workshop intends to bring faculty across the college together to explore ways that we can center issues of data and power in our teaching and scholarship.

Workshop Goals:

  1. Cultivate community at intersection of Humanities and Data Science
  2. Forge collaborations across and within disciplines
  3. Create additional courses in Data Science Minor that center humanistic thought
  4. Create resources to support course development and research
