Youthika Chauhan, a third year PhD student at Kenan-Flagler Business School, conducted her research on social hybrid enterprises in India. She spent her summer interviewing managers and founders of social enterprises in different parts of India during the summer of 2019. Her sample includes firms working on a wide range of goals such as reduction of food wastage, low cost healthcare to rural women, affordable education for low-income families and innovative treatment of industrial effluents. Her research aims to push the frontiers of business literature in a way that will help businesses address societal problems. By creating an understanding of how businesses benefit through social goals, she will try to encourage sustainability considerations in for-profit firms. This opportunity allowed her to take interviews and understand firms which work towards social causes in India. Through her research, she better understood how companies can benefit through their social missions, and maximize the positive impact they create.
