Our project involves developing an iPhone app for UNC’s golf facility, with the intended users being the men’s and women’s golf team, Finley golf course donors, and prospective recruits. In short, the purpose of the app is twofold: to aid UNC’s golf team and to act as a recruiting tool.
First, our app aids the golf team by simplifying and organizing the drills and resources at the practice facility. Specifically, the app allows coaches to send drills to students with a list of specific instructions, enabling the student athletes to efficiently spend their time practicing. Additionally, the map feature allows users to get accurate distances to a variety of places on the course, giving them another tool to hone their skills. Moreover, the app is designed to gamify the drills through a leaderboard, which will increase inter-team competition and thus encourage users to spend more time practicing and improving their game.
Second, by building a tool that showcases the functionality of the practice course, we are providing prospective recruits with another reason to compete for UNC. In fact, given that this app is apparently the first of its kind, we are creating an experience that distinguishes UNC from every other top golf collegiate program.
In the end, all of this is important because it allows UNC’s golf team to further cement its reputation as one of the top collegiate programs in the country.
