Harvey Seim (PhD, oceanography, UW, 1993), faculty. Harvey joined UNC in 2000. He served as chair of the marine sciences department 2013-2021 with a year break during 2018-2019.
Yubeen Jeong (MS, oceanography, Pusan University, Korea, 2021), graduate student. Yubeen is working one the Cape Hatteras Time Series project, analyzing the more than 15 years of high-frequency radar data collected along the North Carolina coastline. She has also supported the NASA-funded SWOT program by participating in a CPIES deployment cruise in early 2023, and the Marchetti lab at UNC by participating in a PUPCYCLE cruise off Oregon.
Tony Whipple (MS, marine sciences, UNC, 2005), research technician. Tony works at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead CIty, NC. He primarily works with Dr. Luettich’s lab but also supports the Seim Lab on several projects, including the SECOORA high-frequency radar system and glider programs.
Victor Nguyễn (BS candidate, UNC), undergraduate student. Victor is working with glider observations, with a focus on biologically-relevant observations, and also assisting with piloting glider missions.
Alumni
Lu Han (MS oceanography, UDel, 2017, PhD marine sciences, UNC, 2023) Lu worked on her PhD as part of the PEACH project. She participated in 2 of the research cruises and her analysis focused on drivers of exchange between the coastal and open ocean. Lu is presently working with a water district in California.
Sara Haines (MS, geology, UNC, 1989), research associate. Sara first worked at UNC 1989-1991 supporting the Bane lab, tried the corporate world for a year, and worked 1992-2022 supporting the Seim and Bane labs. She managed the Seim lab for 20+ years, developing observing systems (especially the met-ocean buoys), managing data flow from all observing platforms, and leading processing and analysis for a variety of projects. She has retired.
Ollie Gilchrest (BS, Environmental Sciences, UNC, 2019), research technician. Ollie conducted much of the data processing and analysis associated with the Lake Nutrient Management Strategies projects in Jordan and Falls Lake. Ollie is presently a graduate student at Old Dominion University.
Mike Muglia (PhD, marine sciences, UNC, 2019). Mike was a research technician with the Seim Lab for a number of years before also pursuing his PhD with Dr. Seim. Mike’s PhD work focused on extracting information on the Gulf Stream from surface current maps generated with high-frequency radar on the NC coast. Mike is presently a research faculty member at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese, NC, now part of East Carolina University.
Megan Schutt (MS, marine sciences, UNC, 2016). Megan led analysis of wind profiler observations collected along the NC coast to examine the potential for offshore wind energy generation. She is presently working with GE Renewables designing wind turbines.
Greg Dusek (PhD, marine sciences, UNC,2011). Greg studied rip currents along the NC coast for his PhD, leading to the development of a model of rip current danger that utilizes wave forecasts; an updated version of the model has recently been adopted nationally by NOAA. Greg is presently a Senior Scientist with the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services, a part of the National Ocean Service in NOAA.
Catherine Edwards (PhD, marine sciences, UNC, 2009). Catherine examined shelf circulation off GA using glider surveys, moored and meteorological observations, focusing on documenting the sea breeze/land breeze and the ocean response. Catherine is presently an associate professor at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, GA, now part of the University of Georgia.
