Using Visual Metaphors

Don’t be so literal

When you’re making motion graphics it’s easy to immediately think of everything literally, but that may not be the best way to go. Try and use visual metaphors to convey ideas. Remember, we can use the power of recognizable symbols, silhouettes, and images to help viewers understand what we are trying to say.

The videos below are great examples of using visuals that are not literal, but just as impactful and good at getting their point across.

After watching the motion graphics below, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What was the goal of this piece?
  • What story was this piece trying to tell?
  • What words would you use to describe the visual and audio design of this piece?
  • What moments of animation stood out or felt special to you?
  • Do all of the elements fit together?
