Lindsay is a current Sophmore at UNC, and a Vice-head Delegate for Model UN at UNC, also known as UNCMUN. Lindsay has always been interested in history and politics, but only began her journey in Model UN when she came to UNC to study History.
By studying history at UNC, Lindsay said that she enjoys getting to apply different concepts she learns in her courses to relevant cases in Model UN. Some of her key memories come from her time spent with the UNCMUN travel team. During these week-long conferences, student delegates fly to different states and join with other student teams in a UN-style setting. Lindsay said these are key to their learning experience and give them a chance to practice their skills with new people and in a more high-stakes environment.
After graduation, Lindsay hopes to become a history professor, using the skills and knowledge she is learning from her position as a member of UNCMUN to a now-head delegate. One of her biggest challenges has been balancing both school and this leadership role, as meetings often go late into the night to help prepare new and returning members for the next conference. The ability to think on your feet and prepare a sound argument relating to relevant issues for whatever country you are assigned is paramount to being successful, and a lot of time goes into preparing students for that environment. Part of this preparation is holding weekly meetings, speaking with students one-on-one, and holding bootcamps for specific areas like crisis committees to ensure everyone has to tools available to be successful.
Currently, Lindsay is preparing for her next conference in Georgia with a team of students who will represent different countries as ambassadors. She said she enjoys spending time with a team that is dedicated to the subject and wants to build their diplomatic, debate, and public speaking skills through conferences with her. As much as she enjoys the act of delegating, Lindsay said that the relationships she has formed with her fellow UNCMUN members make being a part of the team worth the difficulties she may face.
