Symposium on Information and Social Good 2021: Power. Connection. Consequences.

This has been a year of change, of isolation, protest, anger, fear, sadness, relief, and joy.

The 2020/2021 year brought us COVID-19, new threats to trans children and adults, sharp increases in anti-Asian violence in the United States, worldwide stay-at-home orders, and the loss of over 560,000 Americans to COVID-19. But it has also brought us worldwide marches and actions in defense of Black lives and against police violence,  groundbreaking new vaccines, innovations in online education and telehealth that have the potential to improve access, and much more. Information & data have been front and center as the world coped with the pandemic, social movements grew, and the U.S. went through a historic election.

This year, we designed the symposium as a three part virtual event. We shine a spotlight on POWER in information and data systems, services, and spaces. We celebrate the CONNECTIONS that held us together during this difficult year, and that will hold us together moving forward. We examine the unintended CONSEQUENCES of our innovations, so that we can move forward intentionally. Thank you for stopping by to take a look.
