Designing learning experiences

When designing any learning experience first you need to outline what is it that you want learners to know. What is the goal of this training, and how can we ensure learners feel confident using the skills or techniques being taught? You will need to assess this somehow, but I’ll get to that later.

For immersive learning, learners need to understand the world they are entering. Who are they? What are their roles? What do people think of them? What is the context of this scenario? This is set up in the first scene. In the second scene, recognize and identify what the problem is in the context. Then provide the learner with some way to resolve the conflict. Lastly, how will learners know the long-term effects of their decisions? This may be another scene or done through a de-briefing session.

Now, how do you know if learners actually learned something? With any learning experience, assessing knowledge is key to understanding what is known and unknown by students. This can be done through formal or informal assessments in the forms of quizzes, essays, simulation results, or discussions.
