Intellectual property infringement case: “Blurred Lines” Copyright Suit

Robin Thicke and Pharrell William’s hit song “Blurred Lines” was under investigation for copyright infringement with Marvin Gaye’s 1977 song, “Got to Give It Up”. The case was taken to a federal court where the Gaye family issued a lawsuit that gained a verdict that awarded them 5.3 million dollars in damages. In 2016, Thicke and Williams tried to overturn the verdict but the federal appeals court upheld the ruling. The case settled in 2018, and the 5.3 million dollars was awarded to the Gaye family and are know entitled to royalties in the future and 50 percent of the songwriter and publishing revenue of the song “Blurred Lines”.
