I think that a video essay is a legitimate piece of academic work, although it still must be accompanied by text. A video essay is a great way to summarize a dense academic work, but there is no way an academic paper is ever going to published only in video form. Nevertheless, video essays will continue to become more popular as the newer generations are more reliant on screens.
