Riley Hatcher Video Essays in a Classroom

I think a video essay could definitely replace traditional essays in some classrooms. Do I think it will? Probably not. For instance, as a class, we have all had to learn how to use certain programs like adobe and iMovie to create our video essay. Some teachers or professors may not have the time to teach the basics of those programs. In addition, students probably do not want to spend the time looking up how to do it, when they could just write an essay like normal.

Personally, video essays are fun and way more engaging. I’d much rather peer review a video or image, rather than a written essay; however, traditional essays are consistent and something that everyone is pretty much used to. Again, I think the main issue is just teaching how to use the type of programs that support video essays. Video essays are time-consuming and take much time and effort to perfect.

Video essays are legitimate academic work. Video essays are basically traditional essays just read aloud with different tones and vocabulary to match the aesthetic of the images or sound playing within the video. Any video essay in an academic setting is academic, as the person who made it took the time to do research on the topic, write about it, find images/videos/sounds for it, and cite it all! It’d be wrong to say that it was not academic!
