As much as I love video essays, I do not think they will be able to replace the traditional essay in other classes. The issues that come with using video essays include access to technology for all students and not all information can be explained using video. Video essays are definitely legitimate academic work but I know many people that would prefer to just write out thoughts rather than having to combine them into a video. Video essays are legitimate because they still require you to do research and put material together. I think there is no way video essays can takeover the traditional essay do to how everyone has been raised to read or type out all work.
