Song Sample: Maggie Caudle

What makes this song unique and why do you think it uses the sample? What does using that particular sample do?

For my song sample, I chose Nicki Minaj’s “Roman’s Revenge” ft. Eminem, which samples from OneRepublic’s “Fear”. This one was really surprising to me as I have always loved OneRepublic and Nicki Minaj, but I never put together that it was a sample. I think this is a unique example because these songs come from two completely different genres with different sounds. The sample appears first in Eminem’s part, and it’s not obvious, but really adds to the background music. Most samples seem to come from similar genres and often from older music as well, but I think Nicki and Eminem made a bold choice by deciding to sample from something more modern pop/rock. It creates a unique mood in the parts of the song where it’s used. Eminem’s fast, intense lyrics are combined with the instrumental build-up from OneRepublic’s song, creating a unique and very powerful sound.
