I chose to search the song “Be Your Girl” by Teedra Moses for several reasons. It is the main song my father would play in car rides throughout my entire childhood, and it is the song I’ve most heard sampled and remixed since its release in 2004. This song samples “The Awakening” by the Ahmad Jamal Trio in 1970. I believe this sample generates a feeling of nostalgia and comfort, the way that the drums and piano dance so beautifully together and create a steady flow is both entertaining and impressive. “Be Your Girl” has since been sampled 14 times by artists such as Kaytranada and Wiz Khalifa. Remixes of the song are used often in hair and makeup tutorial videos on YT (particularly those seeking a Black audience). The song feels warm and describes a feeling we all crave in some way: love.
