Benjamin Response – Caroline Huffman

Walter Benjamin concurs that mechanical reproduction is lacking a certain presence in the current time and space. I agree with Benjamin’s opinion. The authenticity of a work of art will be hindered through mechanical reproduction. As Benjamin defines aura, the aura will be altered. Benjamin also states, “the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from the domain of tradition.” I find this statement to be rather powerful. The reproduction process is damaging to the object. Although there are some positive aspects of mechanical reproduction, overall, I agree with Benjamin’s opinion on the topic.
