Creating a school garden is a journey that requires passion and patience. My mom, Kelly Cancro envisioned transforming a big plot of land into a vibrant and interactive learning environment. After the fence went up and the land was cleared, the process of planting within the garden would begin. This process sparked a sense of teamwork, collaboration, and inspiration among Middle Creeks students and staff.
A few months later, the empty plot of land would become covered in beautiful greens with fruits and vegetables growing from their stems. A wide array of vibrant-colored flowers would soon attract beautiful butterflies and bees. The beauty of growth in nature was exciting to see, and fostered an environment that all students and staff could find joy in being apart of.
The curriculum taught in K-5 schools allows for the school garden to be used as an interactive learning space. Students can learn simple measurements such as counting and weighing vegetables, to more advanced topics such as the life cycles of plants and insects and healthy eating habits.
The food harvested by students and staff is frequently donated to the Holly Springs Food Cupboard, which promotes a sense of giving back among students. The process of growing from seed to plant and then giving back to the community can teach invaluable life lessons to students.
This is a picture of me and my mom in pre-school. She is forever my inspiration and I strive to mirror her kindness, dedication, and commitment to others daily. Her commitment to fulfilling her passions, such as creating a school garden inspires me to pursue my hopes and dreams.
