DURHAM, N.C. – According to the executive summary released on February 7, former Durham Public Schools Superintendent Pascal Mubenga was notified of the district’s budgeting error as early as Nov. 8. 

The investigation by the school district’s legal representatives also said former Chief Financial Officer Paul LeSieur was notified of the nearly $13 million discrepancy a year ago in February 2023. Additionally, the executive summary said Mubenga first informed the entire school board about the problem on Jan. 11. 

The front page of the report released by DPS on Feb. 7 details the district’s timeline of financial troubles.

This investigation was released alongside a copy of the resignation agreement outlining the terms of Mubenga’s departure. Among them are a more than $297,000 severance payment and an agreement that both he and the Board of Education will refrain from filing claims against each other. The school district will also continue to provide liability coverage if any of Mubenga’s actions as former superintendent come into question. 

The Board of Education and Durham Association of Educators will Thursday, February 15th at 5:30 P.M. to negotiate next steps for classified staff. The entire report can be found here. Carolina Week will follow for updates. The full list of search committee members is as follows:
