CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The shooting that took place in August had far-reaching effects outside of UNC’s campus. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools also went into lockdown.

Parents of students in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools said that if they could speak to lawmakers, or other people who could affect change on a broad level, they would ask for more funding for security and open communication.

CHCCS parent Chris Mahoney has a son who attends a CHCCS school. He said he wants more funding for security that is separate from the school’s budget.

“It needs to be separate from the school budget, because every dollar schools have to put towards things like safety and security beyond the typical things is money, is dollars out of the classroom,” he said.

Parent Robert Phillips also has a son who attends a CHCCS school. He said that his son did not contact him during the lockdown, and wondered if school phone policies may have deterred him.

”I don’t know whether my son is correct in his impression that he wouldn’t get to phone me, but I think, like, if they are prevented from using their phones in that situation, I think they should allow them or even encourage them to contact their parents,” he said.
