November is National Native American Heritage Month, and there are several events being held on campus to celebrate.

The Carolina Indian Circle held its 50th annual Cultural Showcase on Monday, which featured a variety of speakers as well as traditional song and dance.

Participants also had the opportunity to make a tobacco tie, which can be presented as a gift to another person.

CIC Executive Treasurer Zoey Locklear said that the Cultural Showcase is an opportunity to share Native American culture and traditions.

“Our Culture Showcase is really a time for us to celebrate Indigenous peoples, not only in the Carolinas, but all through Turtle Island, as well as educate the campus and larger Carolina community about who we are, who Indigenous peoples are,” she said.

Locklear said that she’s looking forward to this year’s Powwow and banquet.

“I’m just really looking forward to all that we’re going to accomplish,” she said.

If you didn’t make it to the showcase, CIC is holding a benefit day at YaYa Tea until 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Proceeds will go towards supporting the CIC Powwow Committee.
