CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC has canceled its contract with the company that was hired to install license plate readers and additional security cameras around campus. According to a statement from the university, they were told on September 30th that the company does not have a license to operate in NC, which prompted the cancellation.

Flock Safety already provides license plate readers to police departments and universities across the state. But a Wake County judge ruled last week that Flock continues to violate a state law that requires any company that installs cameras and other alarm systems to detect illegal activities to be licensed by the state.

According to court documents, Flock Safety is in the process of getting a license, but UNC has already canceled their contract. UNC originally agreed for Flock to install and monitor license plate readers on campus in the wake of the August 28th shooting. In a statement, the university said they “remain committed to working with a license plate reader vendor that will help us accomplish our safety goals.”
