CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Representative Jeff Jackson is running for North Carolina Attorney General.

The Charlotte-based Democrat made the announcement last week after new congressional maps that all but guarantee his defeat in a reelection bid were passed into law by the state legislature.

Jackson becomes the Democratic frontrunner for the open attorney general seat, as incumbent Democrat Josh Stein is running for governor. Jackson previously served as an assistant attorney general and state senator before being elected to Congress in 2022.

He will likely face another sitting congressman in the general election, Representative Dan Bishop, the Republican frontrunner. Bishop is seeking to become the first Republican attorney general in the state since 1975.

It’s not clear what will happen to the other Democrats affected by the new congressional maps. While Representative Kathy Manning said she will run again in her new Republican-leaning Guilford County based district, other affected Democrats have not said if they are running for reelection.
