CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Mental health is a top concern for college campuses around the country according to the American Psychological Association. So, one organization at UNC is working to provide peer support.

The peer support core is offering $30,000 in mini grants. Projects can focus on any or all students, faculty, or staff but applicants are encouraged to focus on high priority student groups such as BIPOC students, students with disabilities, first generation students, and several others.

One project that was funded last year brought a former Air Force Pararescueman to build community within the Carolina Veterans Resource Center. Zachary Marchun submitted that proposal and he says it helped students understand what veterans go through.

“For the veterans [themselves], it opened up a really important dialogue and conversation about feeling included and being part of a community here at UNC,” Marchun says.

Applications are open until May 15 and will be accepted on a rolling basis.
