CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University is in the process of purchasing license plate readers and additional security cameras to be installed on campus, according to UNC Police Chief Brian James.

James made the announcement at last Thursday’s Board of Trustees meeting. He spoke to the trustees about these moves as a part of the ongoing conversation surrounding campus security following the deadly Aug. 28 shooting.

According to James, installing license plate readers is a way for police to stay in tune with campus activities.

“We also want to look at a platform that can integrate all of our technology and provide real-time access,” he said. “So as we’re moving forward, we are in the process of getting license plate readers on campus.”

The university will be getting license plate readers from Flock Safety, which, according to James, can be found at other campus partners.

License plate readers are not the only security measure police are taking. James said the university will install more surveillance cameras on campus.

“We just want to make sure that we have cameras in the places they need to be, and just try to prevent or reduce the number of blindspots that we have on campus,” James said.

In addition to license plate readers and more cameras, James said UNC Police are looking to consolidate existing camera systems, continue providing ongoing active shooter training and create emergency plans specific to campus buildings.
