CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University has now released its Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. UNC and universities around the country are mandated by federal law to release this report by Oct. 1.

The report, which is over 50 pages long, includes important information pertaining to campus safety. That information includes last year’s crime statistics in comparison to previous years. These crime statistics include crimes committed on UNC’s campus and off-campus locations involving students.

This year’s report shows that there were ten hate crimes on campus. This is double from 2021, which had only five hate crimes. This statistic is also notable for the type of hate crimes committed. Six of 2022’s hate crimes were based on sexual orientation or gender identity. No incident in 2021 was based on these identity factors.

Burglaries also increased. In 2022, there were 39 cases of burglary compared to 21 in 2021. In addition, cases of fondling more than doubled. In 2022, there were 24 cases, while in 2021, there were 11 incidences.

Some numbers have decreased, however. In 2022, there were 13 cases of stalking, which is lower than the 27 cases seen in 2021. Dating violence also decreased by half, from 26 to 13.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report was sent out in a formal notice email last week. It can also be found on the UNC Police website by clicking here.
