CARRBORO, N.C. — The 9th annual Freight Train Blues Concert Series is returning to Carrboro this year for an extended eight-week run instead of its usual five weeks.
The concerts are organized by the Music Maker Foundation, a nonprofit that primarily works with roots musicians over the age of 55. The foundation also helps artists record their music and offers grants that assist with basic needs, such as housing and medical bills.
Music Maker Foundation Program Manager Gabi Mendick said that the series was extended this year due to its success in past years.
“We did a survey last year, and the main feedback that we got was, ‘can you extend it?’” she said. “So we added three more weeks.”
The concerts will feature different types of roots music, including salsa, gospel shout, piedmont blues, country and more.
Music Maker Foundation Communications Coordinator Tess Stogner said that performances like Freight Train Blues showcase the talents of the musicians that the foundation partners with.
“We like to say that we partner with our artists,” she said. “It’s not a one way relationship. We’re working with them to preserve and expand our collective understanding of the importance of roots music in America.”
Stogner said that roots music is ongoing, and that she hopes those who attend the concert series gain a deeper appreciation for roots music and its importance in North Carolina culture.
“This music is not something of the past,” she said. “It’s something of the present and the future. These artists’ voices matter, and they tell us stories that we need to hear.”
Mendick said she hopes that attendees are introduced to new music and groups that they may not have heard of otherwise, and that they learn about the music culture in the area.
“We would love for anyone and everyone to come out,” she said. “It’s all ages, and all people are welcome.”
The first concert kicks off on May 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Carrboro Town Commons. Subsequent concerts will take place every Friday at the same time and location until June 23.
