CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- If you’re looking for a new way to zip around campus, the Spin bike has got your back.
The newly launched electric bikes are scattered at various bike stands across campus. The crimson bikes can reach a top speed of 20 miles per hour and can be used in designated areas across Chapel Hill and Carrboro. However, the bike’s speed reduces to 8 mph in designated “slow ride” zones.
“We are very excited to bring a bikeshare program back to the Carolina campus,” said Cheryl Stout, executive director of Transportation and Parking.
The cost to access the bike is one dollar, plus a charge of 29 cents per minute of use. The bikes require that users download the Spin app from the iOS or Google Play app stores and pay for the ride via the app. Alternatively, riders can pay for a monthly pass for $6.99, which provides unlimited riding with no additional unlock fee.
Right now, students can receive a $5 credit to their account, if they complete and pass a safety quiz. Visit Tar Heel Bikes to learn more about the bikeshare program and to download the Spin app.
