CHAPEL HILL, N.C — The North Carolina House has proposed doubling the renewal period for driver’s licenses.

Instead of requiring drivers to renew their licenses every eight years, drivers between the ages 16 and 65 could renew their licenses every 16 years. The renewal period for drivers above age 66 and professional drivers would remain at five years and the renewal period for school bus drivers would remain at three years.

The proposal also includes the removal of the requirement of visiting the DMV for every other license renewal, allowing the process to be done online.

Both drivers and DMVs would benefit from the changes. Drivers would not have to visit to the DMV as often and DMVs would be able make the most use of their limited supply of license examiners.

If the proposal is passed, North Carolina would have the longest license renewal cycle in the country.
