CHAPEL HILL N.C.— An expelled Morehead-Cain Scholar, identified as Jacob Doe in a lawsuit, says he was targeted for false sexual assault allegations.

Doe claims he was expelled after a premeditated and coordinated campaign by four female students to wrongly accuse him, describing the investigation as deeply flawed and gender biased.

Doe says the sexual interactions mentioned in the complaints were consensual. He was exonerated from two of the four complaints. There was a scheduled hearing for March 7; however, it was canceled.

Doe believes the university is at fault because of how it handled this case. The suit alleges that Doe was a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill in 2021 “when he became the subject of a targeted campaign to destroy his reputation, his education and his connections to the UNC community,” according to the complaint he filed in U.S. District Court in February. Doe argues UNC violated his due process rights and Title IX and made a breach of contract. The university and Doe are currently pitted against each other as the lawsuit continues.
