CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Eight Republican lawmakers are getting involved in the fight of UNC’s proposed School of Civic Life and Leadership that was proposed in January.

UNC is accredited by an organization called the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Last month, Belle Wheelan, the agency’s president, was reported to have said her organization will be looking into the Board of Trustee’s decision to request the accelerated development of the new school. She also reportedly said that UNC’s accreditation could face warning status if the Board doesn’t make changes.

Last Wednesday, eight Republican lawmakers from North Carolina signed a letter led by Representative Virginia Foxx. The letter was directed at Wheelan over her comments. In the letter, they stated the expect the agency to, “keep central in it’s decision-making” and asked Wheelan to explain her concerns over UNC’s plans.

Wheelan’s team is working on a response to the lawmakers.
